What is DRMD?
Deep Run Marathon Dance, or DRMD, is a 27 hour dance that has been running for 12 years at Deep Run High School. The dances raises money for 12 charities each year in the Richmond community. The dance is planned by a committed group of students where they pick the beneficiaries, attend fundraisers, and set up the dance. 2018 is the last year of the dance because the director chose to end it to be able to spend more time with her family. However, the dance has made a lasting impact on students, parents, recipients, sponsors, and the rest of the community.
Words from the Director, Kathleen Kern:
Sometimes in life we are faced with decisions that may feel unbearable….. Ending my involvement in Marathon Dance was one of the toughest decisions I have ever had to make. I poured my heart and soul into this event for 12 years and couldn’t have been more proud of the impact that it had on the students, parents, and beneficiaries. Although I know in my heart that this was the best decision for myself and my family, I will miss DRMD more than one can imagine. Thank you to those who shared in this journey with me… I am eternally grateful for the experience of “The Marathon!”
"The dance was a big success, it couldn’t have happened without you. I know my daughter had the best time. She couldn’t talk or walk when she got home, but she can’t wait for the next one. Thank you."
- Lisa Blankenship – Parent
"I could never have imagined what an amazing event this is for everyone involved. It was inspiring to see the attitude of each and every person participating and the total support from families and staff who attended and assisted in this event. "
- Dave Kaechele – Board of Supervisors
"Awesome, Wow, Unbelievable — not even sure those words cover it. I think the kids were speechless after learning they had raised a quarter of a million dollars — that is a lot of good work for those less fortunate than us."
- Nancy Rieckmann – Parent
"I left the dance Saturday with a whole bag of emotions, Happy, Proud, Amazed, Overwhelmed, Excited, Exhilarated, Inspired but most of all Humbled. All of us in The Bertier Foundation are so proud to be just a small part of what you are doing."
- Buck Sutton – Recipient
"I was at the DRMD on Saturday. What an awesome event! I have already sent the kids (well, young adults) a hearty thank you. I also want to thank you Kathleen for all your efforts and for bringing NAMI Central Virginia into this wonderful event. You are our hero's!"
- Kathy Harkey – Recipient
"David and Kathleen, I just want to let you both know how much I appreciate what you have done for our entire school community. Thank you for all of your time, effort, and energy to make the DRMD the signature event here at Deep Run."
- Lenny Pritchard – DRHS Principle
"I am so proud to have been a part of this incredible event. DRMD has impacted this community in so many ways and helped thousands of Deep Run students see how much of an impact they can make. It has been a true honor to be a part of the Marathon Dance.
- Chris Neville – Assistant Director
"DRMD was a life changing experience for me. Being able to help the community in this fashion is something incredibly special and I'm sad to see it go."
- JP Terrell – Student
"DRMD, the Happiest Place on Earth. For those 27 hours, you can go crazy, dance your heart out, and make irreplaceable memories all for a great cause!"
- Cali Hepner – Student
"DRMD was absolutely amazing and life changing. I will never forget the great memories that I made helping out with the dance and actually dancing! I know that I'm going to miss the dance and everyone a lot next year."
- Erin Brubaker – Student
"I love DRMD so much and it was such a privilege to be on the committee. It taught me that there is so much more out there and how many people need help. I loved growing close with all the committee members and helping our community."
- Kylie Tritaik – Student
"In my DRMD experience, I realized my calling to be a leader. Since then I have had several leadership positions. I never realized how wide the impact was until I moved and I still hear from several organizations that DRMD has helped. I have made friends that I know will be by my side throughout my life. I also have made connections that span across the country through marathon dance."
- Becca Quick – Alumni
"I'm so glad DRMD came into my life 9 years ago. 4 years as a student. 3 years on the committee. 5 years as alumni. David and Kathleen and the event itself helped me grow into the person I am today. Community-driven and fueled by passions the dance helped me uncover."
- Hannah Good – Alumni
"I met Kathleen thru a cold call. The first year of the Dance she reached out asking for a few minutes to tell me about it. Her passion and energy came thru as loud with her body language as it did with her words. I supported her, and have not looked back. There are any number of ways to gauge success here, the two that resonate with me are the legacy of the impact her students have made all over the country, and the second the impact she has created locally. Impressive and compelling by any measure. I have no higher degree of respect for anyone in my network then I do for Kathleen."
- Mark Smith – Sponsor
"I've always felt that the South High Marathon Dance gives our students something that they can never get in a classroom, a feeling that very few high school students in the country can experience. When I heard Kathleen was trying to bring marathon to Deep Run and needed help, I was all in. In the years since that first DRMD, I've been blessed with many new friends and relationships, many that will continue even though DRMD has reached its conclusion. It's been a privilege to be part of DRMD."
- Gus Carayiannis – NY Crew
